It’s an incredible honor to have been selected as the recipient for the 2023 College of Arts & Sciences Dean’s Award for Excellence! I am humbled and proud to serve my students and colleagues. It truly is the best job in the world.
Wiggins Symposium 2023
Great job to Charlie, Nick, and Olivia on their poster presentations at Campbell’s Wiggins Symposium today! Charlie and Nick both won awards in the “Merit” category for Undergraduate Poster Presentations! The Chemistry department did great as a whole, with four awards overall. Howard Research Fellows 2023
Congratulations to Rachel on being awarded the Ester Howard Student Research Fellowship for 2023. Looking forward to doing some great work together this summer engineering thiamine-dependent enzymes! ACS Indianapolis 2023
Ryan did a great job presenting his research on engineering thiamine-dependent enzymes at the ACS meeting in Indianapolis this week! We had a great time exploring the city, hearing about some cool science, and trying (unsuccessfully) to find pancakes for dinner. Definitely feeling inspired to get back to lab!
ASBMB Accreditation
Our biochemistry program was just awarded accreditation by the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology! While we knew our program was great all along, it’s nice to have confirmation of that fact by the ASBMB. It’s been an honor and privilege to lead our program’s application efforts, and great to see the hard work of our faculty recognized.

Barthalmus Grant 2022
Congratulations to Nick for being awarded the 2022 George Barthalmus Undergraduate Research Award from the State of North Carolina Undergraduate Research and Creativity Symposium Organization! The award is meant to give sophomores a kick-start in their research endeavors. We’re excited to use the funds in support of our research on thiamine-catalyzed radical chemistry!

SERMACS 2022
Ryan traveled to Puerto Rico this week to present on his work with Dr. Goforth as part of Furman’s REU program, as well as our work with thiamine-dependent enzymes. A little jealous that I didn’t get to travel with them this time, especially since they were at the beach while it was 35 degrees Fahrenheit here!
Hispanic Heritage Month Video
I was invited by Campbell to speak about my Hispanic heritage in the video below! I wouldn’t be where I am today without all the hard work and sacrifices my mom made to build a better life for us. I am super proud to be a part of the Hispanic community and to be able to represent our community at Campbell!
NCICU STEM Mentoring Grant
Congratulations to our interdisciplinary team from Biology, Chemistry & Physics, Engineering, Math and the Office of Student Success for being awarded a STEM Mentoring Grant from the NC Independent Colleges and Universities. This is a 3 year grant program that provides financial support for mentoring programs for underrepresented students in STEM. We are excited to start our program this fall!
Edna Queener Proffit Symposium
We had a great time at our department’s annual Edna Queener Proffit Symposium. Ryan and other department research students shared their research for the year, and Ryan was presented with his Derieux award from the NCAS meeting (Kendall, Dr. Goforth’s student, won one as well!). Campbell Alumna Alisha gave a keynote on her graduate school work at NCSU as well. It was a great way to end the year!
